What you're seeing over Orlando

The jets over Orlando are mostly heading to or from Orlando International, one of the busiest airports in the country, about ten miles southeast of downtown. MCO has no single hub airline. Instead it's a tourist magnet, served by Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Delta, American, United and many international carriers, all bringing visitors to the theme parks.

Orlando's sky also has some unusual features. Walt Disney World and the other big parks sit under permanent flight restrictions, so you won't see aircraft circling directly over them at low altitude. Orlando Sanford International to the north adds Allegiant and charter flights, and Orlando Executive near downtown handles business jets. Tour helicopters operate around International Drive, and on launch days you may see rockets climbing from the Space Coast to the east. Our glossary entry on TFRs explains the temporary and standing restrictions that keep low aircraft away from the parks and stadiums.

Common traffic over Orlando

Southwest, Spirit, Frontier, JetBlue, Delta, American and United all have big schedules at MCO, flying 737s, A320-family jets and A321s. International carriers such as British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Lufthansa and LATAM bring widebodies, and Canadian airlines add winter flights.

MCO's four runways run north-south:

  • South flow, used when winds favor landing toward the south: arrivals approach from the north over Orlando's east side, and departures climb out to the south toward Lake Nona and Osceola County.
  • North flow: arrivals approach from the south, and departures climb out to the north over the east side of the city.

Sanford handles Allegiant's A320-family jets and charter flights, while Orlando Executive and Kissimmee bring business jets and flight training. Tour helicopters and sightseeing flights operate near International Drive and Kissimmee.

Disney World and the other major theme parks are protected by permanent flight restrictions that keep aircraft away from the parks below a certain altitude. Big games at Camping World Stadium bring temporary restrictions too.

On launch days, rockets from Cape Canaveral and Kennedy Space Center are visible from Orlando, about 50 miles east. Airspace near the launch site is closed during launches, sometimes rerouting flights. Summer thunderstorms are frequent and can cause holding patterns and diversions.

Plane-spotting tips for Orlando

The parking garages at MCO and the roads around the airport's perimeter give views of arrivals and departures. Orlando Executive's location near downtown makes it easy to watch business jets. For a different view, Lake Nona and the surrounding area sit under departures in south flow. On launch days, the Space Coast beaches and causeways offer good views of rockets, and Orlando's high-rises look east. Summer afternoon storms are almost daily, so mornings and winter days usually have the best visibility. On the north side, Orlando Sanford's perimeter roads are a good place to watch Allegiant jets and visiting charters. Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, about an hour east, pairs rockets with the space shuttle Atlantis.
