What you're seeing over Kansas City
Most airliners over Kansas City are flying to or from Kansas City International, about 15 miles northwest of downtown in Platte County. Southwest is MCI's largest airline, with American, Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier and others providing more connections from its single modern terminal, and the airport serves mostly point-to-point travelers rather than connecting passengers.
Kansas City's location in the middle of the country makes it a crossroads for overflights. Many transcontinental flights between the coasts, and between Chicago and Texas or the Southwest, pass high over the region, so contrails are a common sight. Closer to the ground, Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport, just across the Missouri River from downtown, handles business jets and sports team charters. And about 60 miles east, Whiteman Air Force Base is home to the B-2 stealth bomber, which occasionally makes a pass over the city for events. On cold, humid days those cruising jets paint the sky with long white lines, and our guide to contrails explains why some days bring dozens and others none.

Common traffic over Kansas City
Southwest is MCI's biggest carrier, flying 737-800s and MAX 8s, while American, Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier, Spirit and Allegiant add more, with A320-family jets, 737s and regional jets. FedEx, UPS and other cargo carriers serve MCI.
MCI has three runways, two parallel ones running north-south and one running east-west:
- South flow, very common with prevailing south winds: arrivals descend from the north over rural Platte County, and departures climb out to the south over Parkville and the Missouri River.
- North flow: arrivals come in from the south over Parkville and the river, and departures climb north over open farmland.
Because MCI is so far from downtown and surrounded by open land, central Kansas City mostly sees aircraft at moderate altitudes on arrival and departure routes.
Wheeler Downtown Airport handles business jets and sports team charters, especially for the Chiefs and Royals. Johnson County Executive and New Century AirCenter in Johnson County add general aviation and flight training. Garmin's headquarters in Olathe means you may also see its test aircraft.
Military flying comes from Whiteman Air Force Base, home of the B-2 Spirit, which occasionally flies over Kansas City for events like Chiefs games. The Missouri Air National Guard's 139th Airlift Wing flies C-130s from Rosecrans in St. Joseph, to the north. Helicopters include Life Flight Eagle medevac, Kansas City Police and news crews.
