What you're seeing over Charlotte

If a plane is flying over Charlotte, it is very likely an American Airlines flight or one of its regional partners going to or from Charlotte Douglas International, about six miles west of uptown. CLT is American's second-largest hub and one of the busiest airports in the world by takeoffs and landings, much of it connecting traffic.

Because CLT is so heavily focused on connections, the airport runs in banks, with waves of arrivals followed by waves of departures several times a day. Its three parallel north-south runways and one diagonal runway mean the traffic pattern over the city depends on the wind. You'll also see the North Carolina Air National Guard's C-17s, which are based at CLT, and business jets heading to Concord, where NASCAR teams base their aircraft. Most of the smaller jets in the arrival stream are regional jets feeding the hub from cities across the Southeast and Midwest.

Common traffic over Charlotte

American and its regional partners account for most of CLT's flights. PSA Airlines, which has its biggest base at CLT, flies CRJ700s and CRJ900s, and American's mainline operation includes A321s, A319s, 737s and widebodies for routes to Europe. Delta, United, Southwest and others serve CLT on a much smaller scale.

How the flows work:

  • South flow, with south winds: arrivals approach from the north over northwest Charlotte and Mountain Island Lake, and departures climb out to the south over Steele Creek and toward South Carolina.
  • North flow: arrivals come in from the south, and departures climb out to the north over west Charlotte.

Uptown Charlotte, east of the airport, mostly sees aircraft on downwind legs and turns at moderate altitudes.

The North Carolina Air National Guard's 145th Airlift Wing flies C-17s from the airport. Concord-Padgett handles NASCAR team jets and business aviation, especially on race weekends. Helicopters include Atrium Health's MedCenter Air and Novant medevac, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, and news crews.

High above, traffic between the Northeast and Florida, and between Atlanta and Washington, passes over the region at cruise altitude. Summer thunderstorms can cause delays and diversions during peak banks. During the busiest banks, controllers often run three runways at once, with arrivals landing on parallel approaches while departures roll on the third.

Plane-spotting tips for Charlotte

CLT's Overlook, an official public viewing area on Old Dowd Road beside the runways, is the best-known place to watch planes in Charlotte, with parking and views of arrivals and departures. The Sullenberger Aviation Museum, near the airport, displays the US Airways A320 from the 2009 Hudson River landing. From uptown's high-rises, look west toward the airport. Spring pollen can create haze, while fall offers the clearest skies. Because CLT runs in banks, timing matters: arrive just before one of the daily arrival pushes and you can watch a long string of jets land in quick succession, followed by a queue of departures waiting for the runway. Race weekends at Charlotte Motor Speedway, near Concord, bring a parade of business jets into Concord-Padgett.
